Rescuers and aid workers fanned out across Jamaica on Saturday to distribute food and water and reach communities still isolated four days after Hurricane Melissa hit the island.

At least 19 people have lost their lives in Jamaica from Hurricane Melissa, which battered the island this week as the most powerful storm to ever hit the Caribbean nation.

In Haiti, the country's civil defence agency said that the death toll had risen to 30, with 20 people injured and another 20 missing.

Hurricane Melissa is expected to weaken into an extratropical cyclone on Friday, Oct. 31, the National Hurricane Center said.

Hurricane Melissa tore through the Caribbean in recent days, leaving a wake of destruction as some of the region’s poorest countries struggled to cope with the storm.
