The refugee cap of 7,500 slots is a drastic decline from the ceiling of 125,000 set by the Biden administration last year. The White House previously said they would not make the refugee determination official until they consulted with Congress after the government shutdown.
A refugee convicted of raping a minor in 2024 will remain in Sweden after his sentence. A Swedish court ruled the rape did not last long enough to be considered an exceptionally serious crime, thus not warranting deportation under UN refugee status rules.
